Two Buddhist brides married in Taiwan
Two Taiwanese women were married this past weekend in the country's first same-sex Buddhist wedding. The brides, Huang Mei-Yu, a social worker and Yu Ta-Ting, have been together for seven years. Buddhist master Shih Chao-hwei, a professor at Hsuan Chuang University, officiated at the ceremony.
The brides said they hoped the wedding would encourage acceptance of same-sex marriage in Taiwanese society. Taiwan is considered to be the one of the more gay-friendly countries in Asia, though it has yet to legalize same-sex marriage. A bill to do so was introduced in 2003, but it has yet to be passed into law.
