Every one possesses an enlightened nature
Article by Nuhsh
Many people are by nature peaceful, joyful, and wise. Their mere presence can bring peace and happiness to those around them. There is no one among us who cannot awaken such qualities from our hearts, if only we could open up to this possibility and make an effort. Every one of us possesses an enlightened nature. Our true qualities are peaceful, joyful, and wise. Our negative emotions and unhealthy expressions are just afflictions-a kind of pollution-not our true nature. That is why Buddhism teaches us that human life is amazingly precious, that we can use impermanence to improve our lives, that we can use the laws of karma to ensure a peaceful death and a joyful rebirth, and that all of us can become fully enlightened, as this is just realizing our own inherent nature. We can earn peace, joy, and enlightenment, not only for this life but also for lives to come; and not only for ourselves but also for countless others. The choice is up to us. If we cultivate the awareness of peace and joy, have positive perception, and strengthen these good habits in our mind-stream, this awareness will transform our life and mental character. Unhappy situations will have little effect on us, and the strength of peace and joy will prevail. But if we don't take advantage of our life right now, in the future we could fall into the misery of confusion, fear, and pain. People who are asleep sometimes experience a spontaneous awareness that they are dreaming and that what is happening is just a dream. There are ways to train ourselves to have such awareness, a technique known as lucid dreaming. We could learn to "awaken" to our nightmares and recognize them as dreams, thereby rendering the fear or threat impotent and changing it into something positive. In the same way, after dying, when we are in the bardo, if we could recognize our experiences in the bardo as illusions, all frightening experiences would become ineffective or even transform into positive effects. It is said that if we are trained in dream yoga, we will ! be able to recognize the after death states (the state of ultimate nature and the bardo, or transitional passage) for what they are-unreal and illusory It is also said that if we are able to recognize our dreams as dreams seven times, then we will be able to recognize the bardo. In fact, some even say that bardo experiences are easier to change than dream experiences.According to Tsele, our thoughts are the most important thing when we are training to encounter dreams and the bardo. We should make a habit of reminding ourselves that everything we do or see is a dream or a bardo, an intermediate state. If we contemplate deeply on this truth, we will surely succeed in dealing with the bardo after death.
