Enlightenment and The Brain
Article by Bruce King
What is enlightenment? Is it the brain suddenly realizing things or is it something beyond the brain and body? I believe it is something beyond the brain and body. Enlightenment entails building a higher consciousness that is outside of the normal everyday consciousness of the brain.
Because enlightenment is something that takes place outside of the brain and body it appears to be a threat to your organic self. Why does the organic self feel threatened? It is because of the separation of consciousness involved in awakening to enlightenment.
Because our brain is designed for survival of the organic body, and it is programmed to perform a certain way related to that survival, if you tell the brain that it and the organic body are not as important or in as much control as your higher consciousness, the brain sees this as a threat. So, the brain will try to prevent you from separating from it, or awakening to a higher consciousness.
While having a sense of survival is a good thing, it is this same sense that becomes a bad thing when it comes to enlightenment. When you tell your brain that you want to separate from it, this feels like death to the organic brain, so it resist this.
How does the organic brain resist your awakening to enlightenment? It will actually make you forget things that might lead you to awakening. And, it will limit your beliefs so that you won't believe certain things are possible; things that might help you build your higher consciousness. It is this escaping of limiting thoughts that your organic brain does not want you to do. And, here is the real trick, as you learn, so does the brain. The brain will modify its approach to limiting you as you gain knowledge.
A great example of how the organic brain wants you to forget things that might lead to enlightenment is an experience that I had. One night, my wife woke me up and told me to stop talking, that it was waking her up. I thought, "I am not talking, I am trying to sleep." So, anyway, long s! tory sho rt, my wife goes back to sleep and now I am wide-awake. Just as I begin to drift back to sleep I hear two voices speaking in hushed whispers above my wife's sleeping body. It sounds like a small radio speaker is above my wife's body. I run through all the logical explanations for this and none of them suffice. I listen for about a minute longer when suddenly my wife turns over and yells, "Stop it! I am trying to sleep." I answer her back and say, "I wasn't talking, I can hear them too." She mumbles, "Yeah, right" turns over and goes back to sleep. The next morning I can barely remember the incident. It takes me a few minutes of talking to my wife about it before we both figure out that something paranormal was going on, we are just not sure what. We both note how hard it was for us to have a clear memory of it. You might wonder how witnessing paranormal events leads to enlightenment. What witnessing paranormal events does is wear down your brain's limiting beliefs, something your brain does not want to happen, so it tries to make you forget or explain it away.
There are many other examples I could site of how our brains are messing with us, but you get the picture. Enlightenment is something that the organic brain does not want. However, you cannot fight your organic brain. You must use subtle steps to train your brain to accept and even appreciate that enlightenment is actually good for it.
