Ken and Fern McGuire, American Zen teachers, pass away within days of each other

We've just received news of two more deaths within the American Zen community, those of husband and wife Shin Getsu Fern McGuire and Hogaku Ken McGuire of Las Cruces, New Mexico. The McGuires were disciples of the late Soyu Matsuoka roshi, founder of the Chicago Buddhist Temple (today The Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicagoand the Long Beach Zen Center. They were both ordained as priests by him.

In what might be a case of the widowhood effect, the couple died within two days of one another. Fern died on her 75th birthday on the 22nd in the couple's yard, found lying behind a truck — the suspected cause of death being a heart attack; then it was learned that Ken died this morning some time at their home, also of a suspected heart attack.

Buddhadharma News wishes to extend our condolences to the McGuire family and their sanghas.
