The Board of the Alliance for Bhikkhunis (AfB) has announced that it is searching for a new president for their board, following the news that Susan Pembroke, who founded the organization, will resign as president in October 2012.

The AfB is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to "providing information on the Bhikkhuni Sangha, educating laity about the essential role bhikkhunis play and raising funds to support bhikkhunis." In addition, they publish the magazine Present: The Voices and Activities of Theravada Buddhist Women.

"I have reached a lovely point in my life, where I will focus on my own Dhamma practice," Pembroke said in a statement published at AfB's official Facebook page. "I am a psychotherapist and am retiring soon. It is my heart's desire to go on long retreats and be offline for months at a time, something I cannot do as President of this wonderful non-profit.

"It has been an honor and privilege to work on behalf of the Bhikkhuni Sangha for the last six years. I have been very inspired by the monastic women I have met, as well the laypeople who have worked so diligently to anchor the bhikkhunis in the West and elsewhere. This is the optimum time to begin AfB's transition into its next stage of growth. I am fully committed to welcoming and training new AfB leadership. I will remain a staunch supporter and part of their advisory board."

AfB has said that any prospective applicant for the position of president should "be grounded in Theravada Buddhism and be deeply committed to protecting the Bhikkhuni Sangha worldwide. In addition to implementing the goals and vision of the AfB, the incumbent would oversee the board and its development as well as AfB's ongoing activities and operations. Candidates should have strong leadership and communication skills, previous non-profit board experience, and work well with people. In addition, this position involves traveling to meetings and conferences worldwide as well as visiting bhikkhunis to become acquainted with their challenges and needs." Applicants should contact AfB's Vice President, Carol Annable, at carolannable@bhikkhuni.net.
