In the Shambhala Buddhist community — as founded by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the pioneering Tibetan teacher who also founded the Shambhala Sun and Naropa University — Wednesday February 22nd is known as "Shambhala Day." (It is also the day on which many Tibetans, generally, might be celebrating the dawn of a New Year, but many, including Tibet's Prime Minister-in-Exile, are asking for such celebrations to be withheld.) Being that this year marks the 25th anniversary of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's death, his life and influence are receiving extra attention; for example, the new exhibit, "Great Eastern Sun: The Shambhala Community in Nova Scotia."

In this video, Carolyn Rose Gimian gives you a curated look at just some of what can be found in the exhibit, which will be viewable at Halifax's Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 through April 21. You'll see treasures and personal effects of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche — whose "graffito" of his family name, Mukpo, leads off this video — and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, as well as contributions from the Nova Scotian Shambhala Buddhist community.

A public opening for Great Eastern Sun will take place on Thursday, Feb 23, at 5:30 pm in Halifax; then, on Saturday the 25th, there will be a community-led tour of the exhibit. Click here for details. And in the Shambhala Sun magazine, we're celebrating Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's life and influence with "Ocean of Dharma," a yearlong series of teachings. Click here to preview the first of these, "A Meditation Instruction," from our current issue.
