Shibata Sensei celebrates 90th birthday
Onyumishi Kanjuro Shibata, a 20th generation imperial bowmaker and kyudo master, celebrated his 90th birthday on December 29 at Boulder Shambhala Center (Karma Dzong). While he turned 90 according to the Western calendar, he is 91 according to his own calculations.
Kyudo is the ancient art of Japanese archery. Shibata Sensei first came to the United States in 1980 under invitation from Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the late founder of Shambhala International. He offered kyudo training to students of Shambhala and was awarded the rank of National Living Treasure of Japan. He was also a mentor to the late Zen teacher, Kobun Chino Otogawa.
